Welcome to our first Internal Comms miniseries of 2026: How to capture that ‘caught in the moment’ interview.
Strong internal communications videos do more than share information—they help people feel connected, informed, and valued. When leaders communicate in a way that is authentic and human, it builds trust, credibility, and engagement across the organisation. Giving space for genuine, unscripted moments allows messages to land with far greater impact and helps leaders connect with their audiences on a deeper level.
The difference is clear when an audience feels a contributor is speaking directly to them, sharing insight that is exclusive, real, and not forced or staged. Done well, it draws viewers in and makes them feel they are gaining genuine, specialist perspective.
Over the course of this week, I’ve created a three-part series to show you and your team how to achieve this effect using a few simple, practical techniques.
Episode 1 – Burn the script
When an interview feels natural and unscripted, it completely changes how an audience engages with it. Viewers feel as though they are being let in on something exclusive, hearing genuine insight directly from the contributor rather than a rehearsed soundbite. That sense of authenticity builds trust, holds attention, and ultimately makes the message far more memorable.
Episode 2 – Asking the right questions
To create truly memorable moments, you have to ask questions that induce an edit-worthy response.
You can’t capture a “moment” if one doesn’t exist. By supporting your contributor with thought-provoking or even polarising questions, you can elicit exactly what you’re looking for: a soundbite for the ages. It worked for Obama, and it can certainly work for you.
Episode 3 – Don’t lose them in the frame
A common mistake is losing your contributor within the frame. As directors and creators, our job is to support them, ensuring they feel confident enough to own that space and project their power and dynamism. In this final episode, I share my top tips for achieving that presence with nothing more than a chair or a trusty stool.
With over 15 years’ experience producing internal comms videos, we’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and how to help contributors feel confident and comfortable on camera. That confidence is what allows real, human moments to shine through and makes communications truly effective.
We hope this miniseries has given you practical ideas you can start using straight away to create interviews that feel natural, confident, and real. Stay tuned for more top tips and insights throughout the year, where we’ll continue sharing simple ways to strengthen your internal communications through video.
